A project presently underway in the Port Moody portion of Burrard Inlet will help to give people a glimpse of what swims beneath the placid surface of this shallow extension of the Pacific Ocean. The project is funded in part by Environment Canada with contributing partners (City of Port Moody, Port Metro Vancouver, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Burrard Inlet Environmental Action Program, Vancouver Aquarium) and participation from local volunteer groups (Pacific Wildlife Foundation, Burrard Inlet Marine Enhancement Society, Port Moody Ecological Society and Burke Mountain Naturalists).

Check out the City of Port Moody website for more information about this event being held on Saturday, July 24th from 10am to 3pm at Rocky Point Park.  You can also read the article our President, Elaine Golds, wrote in the Tri-Cities newspaper about this fascinating project.

Volunteers welcome !

The Port Moody Ecological Society needs volunteers on a regular basis at their Noons Creek Hatchery  every Saturday morning between 9am and 11.30am to help with feeding the fish, administration, water quality testing, amongst other things.  Volunteers of all ages are welcome and students often use our hatchery to gain field experience to help further their environmental studies.

Anyone interested in attending can drop by the hatchery on Saturday morning from 9am to help us out and have a look at what we do.  There are also opportunities during the week if you’re interested !

Thanks a lot !

Pond Seining

On July 17th, a dozen volunteers came to our Noons Creek Hatchery to help with the seining of the pond.  Thanks to all everyone that came along or sent their support via our new Facebook page !

Volunteers put on chest waders and helped to scoop over 70 coho and cutthroat from the large net that was used to bring them to the edge so they could be put into a large bucket for transferring to the creek.

Aqua bugs with Nancy

We were lucky enough to have Nancy offer her Aqua Bugs course to our volunteers in DSCN0168May which was great fun for everyone.  We all dredged a little from the bottom of the duck pond and had a look at the various bugs within the murky waters fromDSCN0173

dragonflies right down to microscopic critters.

Thanks to Nancy for teaching us about the things that lurk in our local waters and how precious they are to our fragile ecology.

Weed Pull

We held our invasive species weed pull at the Noons Creek hatchery on June 5th, cutting out Alders to give the natives and plants that our volunteers have planted a chance.  It was a long morning but we got a lot done and it looks great

Thanks to all of our volunteers who turned up to give us a hand.  We couldn’t do it without you !

Fingerling Festival – THANK YOU !

This years Fingerling Festival at Noons Creek was a huge success and we would like to thank all of our volunteers, supporters and members of the public who came along and supported us.

We had a great range of conservations and local community groups including OWL, the Coast Guards, City of Port Moody, Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival, and Burke Mountain Naturalists to name just a few.

Hundreds of kids attended, enjoying entertainment by Bobs & Lolo, arts and crafts and of course helping to release the thousands of fish into Noons Creek which was a highlight for many of them.

On behalf of the Port Moody Ecological Society, we wanted to say thank you and we look forward to seeing you at next years Fingerling Festival, held the 1st Saturday of each May.
