The DFO Volunteer Recognition Event (a.k.a. the ‘Ugly Bug Ball’) was held on Saturday June 21st at the beautiful A ROCHA complex (https://www.arocha.ca/bc-centre/) on 16th Avenue (corner 192nd St) in Surrey.
The day was absolutely beautiful with nary a cloud in the sky – much to the delight of all present as last years almost called for an Ark to save everyone!
The event officially started with DFO addressing and thanking the many volunteers for their continued work and support. New Regional Manager, Adam Silverstein introduced himself and ended his address by introducing the first cake of the day. DFO community Advisor Maurice Coulter-Boivert then carved it eloquently, handing the first piece to Dave Bennie of the Port Moody Ecological Society who was celebrating his 60th birthday on the day!
There were group displays, tours of the property, including the wetland areas adjacent to the Campbell Creek, Bocce and ‘Whine Sessions’ – not to mention the abundant networking as some people renewed old acquaintances.
The catered food was excellent and was completed by a very delicious ‘BC Berry’ dessert – so good, a good few had seconds!
After dinner, a roulette wheel was set up for hard-core ‘gamblers’ to win books and/or DFO goodies.
One more surprise was in store for the day was a small salmon shaped cake with numerals ‘6’ and ‘0’ candles for Dave Bennie’s birthday.
The day ended with the die-hards grouping around the campfire until late into the night for more networking and sharing stories……………..a wonderful end to the day.
