7pm on Wednesday, 17th February 2021 The Port Moody Ecological Society will for 2021, host their AGM using the Zoom Teleconference platform in Webinar format – see below for details to register. As well as providing an overview of the activities of the Society in 2020, the current Board will be dissolved and a new Board elected for the coming year. The guest speaker this year will be Dr. Brett van Poorten, an Assistant Professor with the School of Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University with a relevant and topical subject.
The Port Moody Ecological Society hosted their AGM on February 22nd 2022 using the Zoom Teleconference platform – for the 2nd year in succession.
Thank you to those that were able to attend the PMES AGM on the 22nd Feb – we hope you enjoyed hearing about our accomplishments for 2021 – and especially THANK YOU all for helping us achieve so much in a year that presented so many challenges – we LOVE our volunteers!!!!!!
Of course, the keynote of the AGM was the fabulous presentation by Zachary Sherker on “Wading to Strike: Identifying a Surprising Predator of Small Juvenile Salmon“.
Zachary is a PhD student in the Pacific Salmon Ecology & Conservation Lab at UBC. He set out to identify terrestrial predators of juvenile salmon. He then went searching for the tiny radio transponders (called PIT tags) implanted into thousands of fish since 2008, thinking that the current location of the tags would lead him to the salmon’s major predators. In his presentation, Zachary tells the story of how he started out searching for missing juvenile salmon, and then shifted his focus to studying great blue herons. And, with a large Blue Heron rookery midway between Noons Creek Hatchery and our sister hatchery on Mossom Creek, this was very topical.
There was the usual organizational and administrative aspects of the meeting as well. A new Board was elected for 2022, incorporating most of the incumbents from 2021. Details of your 2022 Board are as follows. Please thank them for their great volunteer work.
Community stewardship stalwart Elaine Golds continues to give our young Directors-at-Large some guidance, and we welcome Megan Thomas to the team! We know you will all make PMES proud! Thank you also to Kiera Hadden for taking on increased responsibilities in the newly defined role of ‘Director of Social Media’.
For those that could not attend our 2022 AGM ‘Zoomie’ (or simply wish to watch again), we include a link to the recording on the Noons Creek YouTube Channel – please enjoy! We hope to see y’all at the hatchery soon!!!
